Annual Lancaster Covered Bridge Ride Aug. 14-15

February 20th, 2010

Lou has again set up plans for our annual Lancaster Covered Bridge Ride.

Here is the information Lou has provided:

With two individuals in the room the total cost is only $150 dollars which includes ALL meals!!

RESERVATION NUMBER:    800-626-2021  WEEKEND:  Saturday & Sunday, August 14 & 15 2010

So, you owe it to yourself to enjoy the Amish Country at a reasonable price plus enjoying two beautiful days of cycling and sightseeing.

Every year the group has expanded from initially 10 riders to as many as 35 riders.  With this in mind, PLEASE make your reservations early as possible as I had to close out the group last year.  Last year I was able to ADD rooms as I did receive an early count.

Lou shows off a birthday gift from his covered bridge buddies.

NOTE: We will probably leave much earlier this year to avoid the traffic and to have a longer but EASY ride through the country side on Saturday.  I made arrangements for us to change into our cycling gear upon arrival on Saturday.

For the new people who have never did this ride before it is a FUN weekend at your OWN pace and mileage.  I will provide the on-line registration link when available as well as additional information.

Thank you,

Lou Bruno

Karen explains how narrow handlebars will help Lou be more aerodynamic and electronic shifting will help him reach his full potential.

Back in Black

December 5th, 2009

Do black tires really wear longer?

A friend of HBC memeber Jesus Hernandez sends the following information:

Interesting information about colored tires http://yarchive.net/bike/tire_color.html.  Apparently colored  tires lack a polymer called Carbon Black which improves wear resistance and increases wet traction.
To substantiate this claim, Continental bicycle tires on their website state that their colored tires are made from different material than their black tires.  Their black tires also have the Black Chili Compound which they claim wears better and decreases rolling resistance.  I have a pair of blue conti GP 4000 tires on my blue Trek and they wore considerably faster than the black GP 4000 tires on my Madone.  Hence, only black tires for me from here on.

Regards,
Ernest

So perhaps this is the year to add “Black Tires” to your holiday wish list?

NYSDOT Proposing Use of Rumble Strips - Hazard to Bicyclists

November 10th, 2009

Message from the NYBC - New York Bicycling Coalition

CURRENT NYSDOT POLICY: Do not install rumble strips on secondary roads except in rare instances.
PROPOSED NYSDOT POLICY: Installation of rumble strips will be the preferred practice in the design of all secondary roads with a few exceptions.
RUMBLE STRIPS are a well-documented hazard to bicyclists. Accepted practice nationwide dictates rumble strips be used only sparingly on roads permitting cycling.
NYSDOT is proposing an Engineering Instruction (EI), titled “Secondary Highway Audible Roadway Delineators – Guidance and Policy,” which is at variance with the practices recommended by the Federal Highway Administration, The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and other standards setting agencies. Such national agencies generally recommend rumble strips are to be used on two-lane roads if there is a documented run-off-the road accident problem — and then used only as a last resort due to the hazards they create for other roadway users, including bicyclists.

NYBC asks us to contact NYSDOT and your legislators to urge NYSDOT to not issue the proposed policy. Ask them to work with groups, such as the New York Bicycling Coalition, organizers of bicycling tours and events, and local cycling clubs to construct a less hostile policy that better balances the needs of motorist and bicyclist safety.

GPS mapping - full featured

November 2nd, 2009
Screen capture from GPS tracking app

Screen capture from GPS tracking app

Check out the screen capture of the Trimble mapping program. The ride was tracked on a friend’s Blackberry.  We did an out and back ride past Sunken Meadow park with a loop over by St. James. Note the accurate map, the elevation,  speed etc etc.  This functionality is offered by Verizon for $3.50 a month. He emailed the link after we were done with the ride.  (I have cropped out the part of the screenshot that shows the average speed - since in my mind I am faster than gps says I am.)

I have tried ride mapping with the iPhone, but the battery died and the program I was using wasn’t that great. If anyone has advice of a good iPhone app, please leave a comment.

Thanks, Arch

Apartment hunters

October 27th, 2009

Two of our club members, Patty Killion and Don Senior, are seeking a two bedroom / two bathroom house (or possibly apartment) in the Huntington area. If you have any leads or tips, you can send the information to Tony Barone (tbeeska@optonline.net) and he will forward to them. “Two lovely mature individuals” according to Tony.
